Luther Acres Offers Winter Courses

Luther Acres, a Luthercare community, 600 E. Main St., Lititz, is offering a variety of courses for its Winter 2019 "reDiscover A World of Possibilities" program. The courses are one day a week, and some cover a four- or six-week period. All are open to the greater community. Most courses are held on the Luther Acres campus and have varying fees for campus residents and non-residents; some courses are free to attend. The purpose of the "reDiscover" program is to provide an opportunity to learn new things, be creative, enrich minds and have fun!

The courses for Winter 2019 are:

  • What in the World is Square-Foot Gardening: This one-day course is led by Luther Acres Resident Ruth Lohmeyer, who is experienced with this interesting gardening concept that offers many advantages and yields excellent results. Ruth has used this method in her garden plot at the Luther Acres Horticultural Center. The session is on Tuesday, February 19, from 1:30-3:00 p.m.
  • Chocolate! Chocolate! Chocolate!: Join Mark Hoffman from FLIK Lifestyles, Luthercare’s culinary partner, as he creates delicious chocolate dishes. Participants will also receive recipes and enjoy a taste of the final product. Sessions are Thursdays, February 7, 14, 21 and 28, from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Ballroom Dancing for Beginners: Taught by Gregg and Amber Stief of Stief Performance & Event Services, this course will cover the basics of the five major ballroom dances: Waltz, Foxtrot, Rhumba, ChaCha, and Swing. Couples and singles of all ages and abilities are welcome. Sessions are Wednesdays, February 6, 13, 20, and 27 and March 6 and 13, from 6:00-7:00 p.m.
  • Ballroom Dancing – Beyond Basics: Taught by Gregg and Amber Stief of Stief Performance & Event Services, this course will move slightly faster than the beginner course. If you have taken the beginner class and/or are comfortable with the basics of various ballroom dances, then you are ready to take the next step! Sessions are Wednesdays, February 6, 13, 20 and 17, and March 6 and 13, from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. 
  • Watercolor Painting with Andy Smith: Join Lititz artist Andy Smith for this watercolor class appropriate for beginners and experienced painters. Andy has been painting professionally since 1980, winning many awards and garnering special recognition over the years. Art supplies will be needed for this course and can be purchased in advance. Sessions are Mondays, March 4, 11, 18 and 25, and April 1 and 8, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
  • Visit the US Army Heritage and Education Center: This trip to the US Army Heritage and Education Center in Carlisle, Pa., will be led by Jeff Hawks, education director for the Army Heritage Center Foundation. Jeff will share about the center, and then participants will explore the galleries on their own. The session is on Thursday, February 7, with a bus departing Luther Acres at 8:00 a.m. and returning around 3:30 p.m. The bus will stop for breakfast on your own.
  • A Critical Look at the Role of Religion in Our History: This course is led by David Myers, a Luther Acres resident who is a retired United Methodist clergy, pastor, district superintendent, and prison chaplain. Themes for discussion will include: how did religion emerge; what impact do the discoveries of science have on religious faith; and what impact does the life and teachings of Jesus have on our world. Sessions are Thursdays, February 7, 14, 21 and 28, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
