Luther Acres Offers Winter Courses

Luther Acres, a Luthercare community, 600 E. Main St., Lititz, is offering a variety of courses for its Winter 2018 "reDiscover A World of Possibilities" program. The courses are one day a week, and some cover a two-, four- or six-week period. All are open to the greater community. The courses are held on the Luther Acres campus and have varying fees for residents and non-residents; some courses are free to attend. The purpose of the "reDiscover" program is to provide an opportunity to learn new things, be creative, enrich minds and have fun!

The courses for Winter 2018 are:

  • Introduction to Ballroom – Taught by Gregg and Amber Stief of Stief Performance & Event Services, this class will cover the basics of the five major ballroom dances: Waltz, Foxtrot, Rhumba, ChaCha and Swing. Couples and singles of all ages and abilities are welcome. Sessions are: Wednesdays, Feb. 7, 14, 21 and 28, from 7:15-8:15 p.m.
  • Acrylic Painting for Beginners – Whether you are new to painting or just new to acrylic paint, this class is for you. Acrylic paint is very versatile, making it a wonderful choice for beginners. Sessions, led by fine artist Tamera Teets, will be: Mondays, Feb. 19 and 26 and March 5 and 12, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
  • Tai Chi – Taught by Collean Riehl, Wellness Specialist at the Luther Acres Wellness Center, Tai Chi is a type of exercise involving a continuous series of controlled, usually slow movements designed to improve physical and mental well-being. This class is appropriate for all fitness levels. Sessions are: Wednesdays, Feb. 7, 14, 21 and 28 and March 7 and 14, from 10:30-11:00 a.m.
  • Mediation & Conflict Resolution Skills: What Is It and How Can I Use It? – The workshops will focus on mediation and – specifically – elder mediation, when to choose mediation and the benefits of the process and will feature interactive discussions and activities to practice conflict resolution techniques. Sessions are: Monday, Feb. 5, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., and Monday, Feb. 12, from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. 
  • Spiritual Migration and the Book of Revelation – Appreciate the revolution that is occurring within the world’s religious faiths. Themes for discussion include: the hiddenness and activity of God in history; and the nature of apocalyptic thinking; and numbers, symbols, poetry and myth in Biblical stories. Sessions are: Thursdays, Feb. 1, 8, 15 and 22, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
  • Learn to Play Five Crowns – Five Crowns is a five-suited rummy-style card game. This award-winning, classic game is a quick favorite for both avid and casual card players. Sessions are: Wednesdays, Feb. 7, 14, 21 and 28, from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m.
