Luther Acres Offers Fall Courses

Luther Acres, a Luthercare community, 600 E. Main St., Lititz, is offering a variety of courses for its Fall 2018 "reDiscover A World of Possibilities" program. The courses are one day a week, and some cover a two-, three-, or six-week period. All are open to the greater community. The courses are held on the Luther Acres campus and have varying fees for residents and non-residents; some courses are free to attend. The purpose of the "reDiscover" program is to provide an opportunity to learn new things, be creative, enrich minds and have fun!

The courses for Fall 2018 are:

  • Technology Training – This two-session course is led by Andrew Mayers, CEO, and owner of AJM Technology Solutions and Training. The first course focuses on online financial safety, and topics to be discussed include mobile and online banking, encryptions, phishing, and more. The second course will simplify the importance of the options and conceptions behind “the Cloud” while also reviewing the necessity of backing-up personal information in this increasingly digital era. Sessions are: Monday, October 8, and Wednesday, October 17, from 1:30-3:30 p.m.
  • Voices of the Past Speak to the Future: Central PA’s Military Heritage – Join Jeff Hawks, Education Director for the Army Heritage Center Foundation, to learn about Central Pennsylvania’s military heritage. Time will be available after the lecture for a question-and-answer session. The session will be held on Tuesday, October 23, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Yoga for Healthy Aging – Taught by Michele Zerbey, a certified Kripalu Yoga Teacher, this course is designed to help participants enjoy the process of getting older – and wiser – by learning what the mind and body need for optimal health. A well-rounded yoga practice cultivates strength, flexibility, and balance for maintaining physical, mental and emotional well-being throughout your life. Poses can be modified to every body type and level of ability. Sessions are: Thursdays, October 4, 11, 18, and 25 and November 1 and 8, from 9:30-10:30 a.m.
  • Nutrition: Fact or Fiction – The sessions, taught by Luther Acres Wellness Specialist Collean Riehl, will explore questions and truths about nutrition. Topics will include: Supermarket Smarts and Label Reading, Performance Nutrition: Managing Stress, and Debunking Diets: Weight Loss Strategies. Sessions are: Tuesdays, October 2, 9 and 16, from 11:00 to 11:30 a.m.
  • Staying Vertical – Join the Luther Acres therapy department and learn the common causes of falls and how to reduce your risk of falling, and also receive a balance screening. Sessions are: Wednesdays, October 10 and 17, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.
  • Together They Made the Modern American Presidency – Retired Lampeter-Strasburg School District Superintendent Robert Frick returns to present the first of three sessions in his new series. This is an apolitical presentation as researched by the presenter on the leadership style of the 12 men considered by historians as the modern-day presidents. Sessions are: Wednesday, October 10, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.; Thursday, October 18, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m.; and Wednesday, October 31, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.
