The residents of St. John’s Herr Estate, a Luthercare senior living community in Columbia, are gearing up for their first “Sports Day,” a fun day filled with physical activity, socializing, and some healthy competition!
“Sports Day” – planned for this Thursday, September 14 – will feature campus-wide games and activities, including axe throwing, football distance throw, baseball derby, basketball foul shots, cornhole, Wii bowling, shuffleboard, darts, timed mile walk, and waiter obstacle course.
Judges (St. John’s Herr Estate team members) will be set up at each event to help with scoring and updating the leaderboards. When the day is over, scores will be tallied, and the resident winners will be honored at an awards ceremony at a later date, with ribbons awarded for first, second and third place in each event.
Activities will be held both indoors and outdoors, with morning activities from 10:00 a.m. to noon, with a break for lunch, and afternoon activities from 1:00-3:00 p.m. In the event of rain, the activities will move indoors.
Residents who choose not to compete are encouraged to cheer on their friends and neighbors! Refreshments will be available for anyone participating or watching.
“This is the first time we’ve planned anything like this,” says Heather Dennis, Executive Director at St. John’s Herr Estate. “It’s a great way to celebrate active aging, try something new, and enjoy some friendly competition. I’m sure there will be a lot of laughs!”
