Alex Krieger has worn many hats over the years as a soldier, nurse, and even farmhand—but no matter where life has taken him, his commitment to serving others has been constant.
Originally from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Alex learned the value of hard work early on through agricultural jobs. These included dairy farming on a farm with 300 Holstein cows, and fruit picking in a local orchard. Later, in high school, his time volunteering as an EMT would spark a lasting interest in healthcare and lay the foundation for his future.
After a brief time studying nursing at York College in 2010, Alex made the decision to enlist in the U.S. Army, where he served for ten years in both active duty and reserves. Alex started out as an infantryman but was soon approached by the Army’s 3rd Infantry Regiment, also known as The Old Guard. While serving as a member of the Caisson Platoon he helped honor fallen service members, participating in over 700 military funerals and caring for the horses and equipment used in these ceremonies. Later, Alex transitioned to the Army Medical Corps as a 68W Combat Medic, and with support from the Chapter 33 GI Bill, he returned to York College to complete his Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
After graduation, Alex began his civilian nursing career on the med-surg floor of Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan. When the COVID-19 pandemic emerged, he shifted to more critical roles, floating between departments and growing his skills by offering care wherever it was needed most.
Upon returning to Pennsylvania, Alex continued gaining experience in various healthcare environments from hospital units to correctional facilities. It was in these settings that he discovered a new passion for long-term care. “I always said in nursing school, I’m not going to work in a nursing home. But then I started working with the geriatric population, and I just sort of fell in love with it,” he shares.
Today, as the Director of Nursing at Luther Acres, Alex leads the nursing team to ensure that Healthcare Center residents enjoy an individualized, supportive, and caring experience. Every day he supports this by reviewing reports and collaborating with our interdisciplinary team to see that all aspects of resident care are thoughtfully addressed. Even with a full slate of administrative responsibilities, Alex still prioritizes bedside nursing to maintain his strong connections with both residents and his team. “I want to lead by example, show that I’m in this with them,” he explains. “We’re all here for the same goal.”
While supervising everyday operations involves many moving parts, Alex approaches the task with discipline, grit, and a strong belief in teamwork —qualities that make him a valued leader and example of the impact that one person can make. Thank you, Alex, for your commitment to excellence. Your actions truly make a difference!
