For Kimberly Rodriguez-Torres, nursing is a path she was meant to follow. As the oldest of six siblings, Kimberly grew up embracing the role of caregiver in both her family and community. “From a young age, I knew I wanted to become a nurse,” she shared, “I’ve always had that passion in my heart. I naturally found myself caring for those around me and going the extra mile for my loved ones.” Kimberly also found inspiration in her grandmother, whose background as a nurse gave her insight into the career, helped her recognize how it aligned with her values, and encouraged her to go into nursing.
In 2022, Kimberly’s commitment to pursuing healthcare led her to apply and later receive a Luthercare High-School Nursing Scholarship. Getting the Nursing Scholarship helped her begin her studies at Alvernia University, where she is now a rising senior earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing with a minor in biology. Kimberly has continued to excel in both academic and hands-on care setting, gaining experience with clinical rotations in pediatrics, oncology, and school nursing settings.
This year, Kimberly decided to take things a step further, by applying to our summer internship program. Funded through a grant from LeadingAge PA, the internship was designed to introduce nursing students to the world of senior living and showcase the diverse career opportunities it offers. Over the course of eight weeks, Kimberly was immersed in every aspect of our community’s operations — from direct care to billing, wellness, and more. “I really was excited to experience what Luthercare truly stands for, rather than just hearing about it,” she said.
For Kimberly, the most meaningful part of her summer internship was connecting with residents, which helped her build her interpersonal skills, and added to her already impressive background in geriatrics. Kimberly also works as a home caregiver for seniors, where she provides essential day-to-day medical support. Her time as an intern has helped her grow even more in this role.
As she nears completion of her undergraduate degree, Kimberly is setting her sights on advanced nursing practice. In the future, she plans to pursue a master’s degree and is determined to continue expanding her knowledge across specialties. One area of care that she is especially passionate about is serving Spanish-speaking communities. “There are so many people who receive less care just because of a language barrier,” said Kimberly, who is fluent in Spanish. “I’m very excited to make a difference within that. At the end of the day, it’s all about advocating for the patient.”
As a role model for her siblings and a proud member of the next generation of nurses, Kimberly Rodriguez-Torres is already making an impact. With her heart for service, strong educational foundation, and ever-growing knowledge, she is poised to become a compassionate leader in the healthcare field. Luthercare is proud to support emerging healthcare professionals like Kimberly and looks forward to seeing the future impact she will have!
