Breaking New Ground in Lititz

In 1965 Luthercare broke new ground in Lititz with the arrival of Luther Acres—A Luthercare Community. With this addition, the organization would mark an expansion of services, and provide new opportunities to serve the needs of the greater community.

At it’s dedication on September 18th 1966, Luther Acres served 7 residents who had relocated from the original Luther Town Home in Lancaster city. In a marketing brochure, Luther Acres was described as “a sprawling, one-story brick and plaster, all-electric building” that had a, “pleasant, spacious, airy, and well lighted atmosphere”. The brochure also advertised good TV & radio reception; and spaces for sewing, hobbies, crafts, games, meetings, and clubs.

A year after opening, Luther Acres housed 58 guests, and would soon expand to provide an additional 26 beds. In total, eighty staff members, and hundreds of volunteers provided for all services including transportation, dining, shopping services, and entertainment.
